There is a little confusion between a miniature Dachshund and a regular Dachshund puppy.
While they look very similar they are actually quite different and this is important if you are trying to figure out which one would fit into your family.
The biggest, and most obvious, difference is size. Miniatures are generally 11 pounds while the standard dogs are usually between 16 and 32 pounds.
Miniatures would do better than a standard in an apartment as they can reach their exercise needs in the apartment.
While minis have a lot of energy and love to walk and play, they have smaller legs so they can’t do it for as long as standard dachshunds can.
Miniatures are very fragile, so stairs and children aren’t always the best combination. Their spines are prone to injury so they need help going up and down stairs.
Because they are so small, you have to watch where you step and sometimes children don’t understand just how small and delicate they really are. If you have small children a standard size dachshund would be a better match.
While owning any pet can be costly, it’s the size of the pet that determines just how costly they could be. Miniature dachshunds are typically less expensive than the standard size for several reasons.
Vet and food bills will be lower as they don’t require as much medication and food.
Dachshunds are a loving and loyal no matter if they are a miniature or a standard. They will warm your home and be the perfect furry friend for your family.
