How to Care for Your Dog’s Ears

Few people realize the importance of caring for your pup’s ears on a regular basis. By doing so, you’re reducing their chance of ear infections, excess wax buildup and discomfort.

Here are a few things to know about dog ear care and how to keep them happy and healthy!

Look out for strange behavior

As your dog’s owner, you can most likely recognize a shift in behavior. Some potential signs of an ear infection are ear discharge, odor, excess scratching around the ear, redness in the ear canal, and sensitivity. If you notice any of these behaviors or signs, take them to the vet for a check-up.

Can I prevent ear infections?

Preventative measures can always be taken by regularly cleaning your dog’s ears. Utilize a mild cleanser specifically made for pets, avoiding anything with harsh chemicals in it, as they can add to the inflammation.

What’s the right way to clean my dog’s ears?

While cleaning your dog’s ears, it’s important to be gentle, as the ear area is very sensitive and can cause discomfort. Allow the prescribed amount of cleanser to travel down into your dog’s ear canal. If this is painful, then it is essential to consult your veterinarian!  Then gently rub the base of the ear for 10-20 seconds. While the regularity of how often you should clean your dog’s ears varies based on breed, age, level of activity, etc., typically once-a-month is a good rule of thumb.
