Protecting Your Puppies From The Summer Sun!

Protecting Your Puppies From The Summer Sun!

You may not know this, but just like people, puppies can get sunburn, too! Their sensitive skin is prone to sunburns and skin cancers just like ours, and it’s important that you protect your pup from the summer sun this season by being mindful of their outside play and using sunscreens when necessary.

Most areas of your pup are protected from the sun by their fur or hair, but areas that oftentimes get sunburnt are the tips of the ears, nose, and tummies. If your pup gets bad sunburn, it might be a good idea to take him or her to the vet. Signs of bad sunburn are persistent blisters or redness and peeling. If your pup is burnt on his or her ears, and the ears become bent over and almost crispy to the touch, your pup needs medical attention.

For a regular old sunburn, topical over the counter medications are usually enough. You can treat your pup’s affected areas with aloe Vera creams, oatmeal soaks, or cold compresses. There also sunburn creams you can buy that contain a little bit of medication that can ease your pup’s pain.

To prevent sunburns in the first place, you can use sunscreens with an SPF of 15 or higher. There are puppy sunscreen products, which are best for your pets, because human sunscreens contain ingredients that can be harmful to your pup. You should apply sunscreen to your pup’s sensitive areas if he or she will be outside playing for a while between about 9 am and 3 pm, which are the peak sunburn hours.

With a little bit of prevention, your pup can enjoy the summer months with no sunburns to worry about.
